A Roentgenographic Study of Skeletal Lesions in Sarcoidosis

Abstract

Sarcoidosis has been recognized in recent years as a generalized disorder of interest and importance to physicians in virtually all branches of medical practice. Roentgenologists have long been familiar with the occurrence of lesions in the bones of the hands and feet of patients with this disease. Estimates as to the frequency of skeletal involvement and as to the clinical value of its demonstration have varied widely. The reported occurrence has ranged from none in one study¹to 43% in another.²The frequency observed in large American series has approximated 20%,* while a recent Scandinavian study of 50 patients demonstrated skeletal lesions in only 6%.⁵It was our impression that the prevalence in patients under our care was lower than that reported in the American studies cited above.
