A pool of water-compatible catalysts, namely the chiral prolinol-based catalysts 1, has been developed for highly enantioselective CC bond-forming Michael reactions in water (see scheme). The synthesis of (S)-Rolipram, a type IV phosphodiesterase inhibitor, was also demonstrated.
