As a novel electromechanical converter, the electrical variable transmission (EVT) has gained much attention, which is very suitable for use in hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). But little work has been done on EVT applications to HEVs, such as global modeling and control strategy development for the EVT equipped HEV, which limits its use in the real world. Therefore, this paper makes the global modeling for an EVT equipped HEV and studies a control strategy of power follower so that the operation characteristics of the vehicle components, such as EVT and internal combustion engine (ICE), could be analyzed and the ICE operation could be optimized. The simulation results prove that EVT could satisfy vehicle performance requirements, and fuel economy is improved compared to a conventional vehicle. Also, the simulation provides reference for EVT design and control, which is also important for EVT applications. Energetic Macroscopic Representation (EMR), a graphical modeling tool suitable for modeling and control of complex electromechanical systems, is used to organize interconnection of subsystems.
