Abstracts While doing fieldwork among the Nuu‐chah‐nulth (Nootka) of British Columbia, the author encountered a copy of a 50‐year‐old letter written by members of that tribe to protest the firing of Morris Swadesh by City College of New York, which followed Swadesh's indictment by the McCarthy Committee. The incident provides an outsider's view of the American Anthropological Association's handling of the matter and possibly suggests an evaluative metric for future institutional decisions.
