Abstract A novel type of printed and doubled‐sided dipole antenna with multiband operation for wireless local area networks and worldwide interoperability for microwave access is presented. The antenna is composed of several symmetrical branch strips dipoles which are employed as resonators for multiband operation and a modified rectangular ground plane as a reflector. Prototype of the proposed antenna has been constructed and experimentally studied. The measured results of the tri‐band not only explore wide −10 dB impedance bandwidths of 20, 14, and 15% at the operating bands of 2.5, 3.5, and 5.5 GHz respectively, but also show good agreement with the numerical predictions. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
