Capabilities and applicability of a semi-quantitative analysis program were critically investigated with National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Standard Reference Material (SRM) 1643b (Trace Elements in Water). Several instrument parameters and methods of analysis were examined in order to determine their effects on precision and accuracy. The best results were obtained through the division of the provided element response table into three groups and revision of the response table with V, Cs and lr as internal references. Complex samples including biological and botanical SRMs were examined. Analytical results of 23 elements indicated that the elemental concentrations were within 30% of the certified values.
