Abstract

A case of spontaneous occipito-atlanto-axial dislocation following acute tonsillitis and bilateral suppurative submaxillary lymphadenitis is described. Occipito-atlantoid dislocation can be recognised clinically by palpation of one transverse process of the atlas behind the mastoid, and radiologically by the basal (submento-vertical or verticosubmental) view. This basal view is an essential part of all radiological examinations of the atlas. The radiological examination of the upper cervical spine in torticollis is discussed. The phenomena in X-rays of the upper cervical spine of normal subjects occurring on bending and turning the head are discussed.
