The controlling function of the crystal lattice in many reactions in the solid state can be exercised by the rigid [2.2]paracyclophane spacer in photochemical processes in solution. For example, irradiation of the bisvinylogous cinnamophane 1 affords [5]ladderane 2 in good yield.
