Abstract

Nitric oxide counteracts the vasoconstrictor effect of angiotensin II in normotensive rats, whereas this protective mechanism is impaired in hypertensive rats. This impairment potentiates effect of angiotensin II on vascular resistance, thereby contributing to the development of high blood pressure.
