Abstract Following an idea of Prigogine and Bak the frequency factor of interstitial diffusion is calculated for a classical, one‐dimensional model of a crystal. An isotope effect is found which is more complicated than that obtained from rate theory. This effect depends very strongly on the lattice spectrum. The model explains qualitatively recent experimental observations on the isotope effect.
