The literature concerning this rare syndrome, alternatively known as maladie des tics , has been mainly descriptive since it was first mentioned by Itard (1825) and later by Gilles de la Tourette (1885 and 1899). Its nature remains in doubt, and until recently it has been believed to be a progressive condition inevitably ending in psychosis or pursuing a chronic course.
