Gold member: The last of the simple metal coordination geometries (linear) joins the family of metal–ligand arrangements that have been used to template the formation of mechanical bonds. Both catenanes and rotaxanes are assembled about a gold(I) template. The picture shows the molecular structure of the gold(I) catenate, viewed parallel to its NAuN bond.
