Abstract

The long‐term effects of chlorhexidine on plaque, gingivitis, sulcus depth, loss of attachment, and gingival recession in the beagle dog were evaluated in this study. Dogs treated thrice daily with 0.2% chlorhexidine digluconate were found to have significantly less plaque, gingivitis, loss of attachment, and gingival recession than dogs treated similarly with water. The study demonstrates that chlorhexidine is effective in preventing the normal progression of periodontal disease in the beagle dog over a five‐year period.
