The monomolecular film characteristics of 4-amino-p-terphenyl have been determined over the temperature range 0°–31°C on a variety of aqueous substrates: alkaline (pH 10), alkaline (pH 10) with 2M NaCl and with 30 wt.% glycerol. No indication of an intermediate state was found. From these results and others already reported, it was concluded that the Kirkwood theory concerning this state is not correct, and that the exhibition of such a transition region is an inherent property of the internal motions of the paraffinic chains possessed by many amphipathic molecules.
