Abstract A study has been made of the steady motion by regelation of wires of various dimensions and conductivities through blocks of ice. The observed velocities of the wires are compared with the theoretical values predicted using the theory given by Nye (1967): for insulating wires reasonable agreement has been obtained, but for metallic wires the theoretical values have been found to exceed those observed by a factor of up to eighteen.
