Intelligent Vehicle Highway Systems: a call for user–centred design

Abstract

This paper views the prospects of IVHS technology from the perspective of human factors psychology. This viewpoint stresses the need for user–centred design in order to optimize the potential benefits and to avoid unintended difficulties with new technology. Three examples of the user–centred approach to IVHS are offered to illustrate the advantage of considering drivers' abilities and informational requirements at an early stage in design.
