Abstract

The naphthyl analogue of retinal (2) combines with bacterio-opsin to produce an artificial pigment absorbing at λmax 504 nm; this suggests that in the native pigment all-trans-retinal may be held around the 6,7-bond in a planar ring–chain conformation.
