Structural models for the incorporation of metal atoms into layered dichalcogenides, ME2, are provided by two series of isostructural hybrid organic–inorganic supramolecular assemblies based on cucurbituril adducts of incomplete cuboidal aqua cluster complexes of molybdenum and tungsten, and heterometallic corner-shared double cube derivatives. The picture illustrates the structure of the assembly [{[Mo3Se4(H2O)7Cl2]2Hg}(C36H36N24O12)].
