Binary and ternary mechanisms in the hydration of acetaldehyde

Abstract

Abstract The thermal method of following fast reactions is used to investigate the catalyzed hydration of acetaldehyde at 0°C in solutions of hydrochloric acid and in acetate buffers. The results lend no support to the view that the reaction mechanism involves the simultaneous action of acidic and basic species.
