Abstract

The authors describe an image compression system that incorporates Peano scan with a fractal-based coding scheme for intraframe compression and achieves high picture quality with a bit rate of <1 bit per pixel. An adaptive algorithm is included in the procedure in order to improve psycho-visual effects. A hardware implementation for this system with very low complexity is also proposed. This low-bit-rate, low-complexity, higher quality intraframe coding scheme can be used for transmitting high-resolution still images over an Integrated-Services Digital Network and is also suitable for many applications in which complexity is a major concern.< <ETX xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">></ETX>
