The subjects included in the health survey were among those studied previously by the Sheffield Council of Social Service in a survey of the social and economic circumstances of the elderly in Sheffield (Greenlees & Adams, 1950). The sample then used was drawn in March 1948 and was a I in 30 random selection from the food-office register of women over 60 and men over 65. The final sample studied by the Sheffield Council of Social Service consisted of 1771 subjects. The health survey was restricted to those of the 1771 subjects who were living alone or as married couples, that is, without any other person.
