This paper reviews the state of the art in using control methods to assure good flying qualities of vehicles in atmospheric flight. Industry methods are summarized along with the requirements that are currently levied on flight control systems. Following this assessment of where we are, the authors guess at where the technology is headed. Suggestions are made regarding where technology advancements would be most helpful to the design and procurement community. To the extent that education of technologists would be a factor in the advancements, suggestions are made regarding the specific educational requirements to achieve them.
