SUMMARYThis is a preliminary report, exploring the relationship between cerebral metabolic activity (represented by its oxygen consumption) and the clinical signs in 9 comatose patients suffering from different kinds of brain damage. It was found that, when cerebral oxygen consumption reaches levels below one-third of the normal values, clinical signs indicating brain death are manifest.
