Der Austritt von Isobuten aus dem Neophyl-Derivat 1 wird durch den kationischen Palladium-π-Aren-Komplex 2 katalysiert (siehe Schema), wobei die β-C-C-Bindung des Katalysators gespalten wird. Führt man die Reaktion in Gegenwart von Ethylen durch, wird der umgekehrte Prozess, d. h. die Insertion des Olefins, beobachtet.
