In designing an electromagnetic actuator it is important to clarify the relationship between the response time and the design factors. The main design factors are the dimension and characteristics of its material. The relative magnetic permeability mu /sub s/ and electric resistivity rho of magnetic steel have serious effects on the response time of an actuator. These effects are quantitatively examined by dynamic analysis using the finite-element method. Criteria for selecting optimum design are proposed in view of the minimum allowable mu /sub s/ and rho and the optimum values of the spring constant.< <ETX xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">></ETX>
