have argued that individuals who persist in smoking, although they may experience unpleasant as well as pleasant sensations upon smoking their fi rst cigarette, may be constitutionally sensitive to the reinforcing and/or rewarding effects of nicotine. The development of tolerance may be more rapid and self-administration more extensive in such individuals In addition, people who do not continue to smoke may be more sensitive to the aversive effects on initial cigarette use.
