A Cd(<sc>ii</sc>) metal–organic framework, {NH<sub>2</sub>(CH<sub>3</sub>)<sub>2</sub>·Cd<sub>2.5</sub>(L)<sub>2</sub>(H<sub>2</sub>O)·(H<sub>2</sub>O)}<sub>n</sub> (H<sub>3</sub>L = tricarboxytriphenylamine), featuring a 3D microporous framework with two different types of 1D channel has been synthesized and used for the naked-eye detection of Cu<sup>2+</sup> ions.
