An attempt is made to investigate and improve the accuracy of finite-element solutions in axisymmetrical magnetostatic field computations. Firstly, a one-dimensional model problem, whose analytical solution is known, is considered in order to exhaustively analyze the influence of the mesh and of the shape functions. A technique is proposed which uses shape functions dependent on the distance from the rotational axis. The approach is accurately described for the one-dimensional problem, and the improvements are shown. The generalization of technique is then discussed and verified in connection with two-dimensional (2-D) problems.< <ETX xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">></ETX>
