Considerable expansion is expected in the development of superconducting materials. Six major areas for research and development in the immediate future are outlined. These are: (1) the development of multifilament Nb/sub 3/Sn and V/sub 3/Ga, (2) the continued search for high-temperature superconductors, (3) the development of advanced conductor designs using existing or new materials, (4) process development and improvement of existing superconductors to provide for economical manufacture of large quantities of superconductors, (5) improved understanding of basic principles relating flux pinning and critical current density, and (6) development of coil design concepts intimately tied in with optimum conductor design and vice versa.
