Abstract The efficiency with which subjects detected brief, rarely appearing signals in an inspection task was found to be related to their degree of ‘ unsociability ’, as measured by a questionnaire. In tests conducted during the forenoon, good performance was associated with a high unsociability rating ; in afternoon tests the direction of the relationship was reversed. Further experiments are planned to determine the reasons for this change.
