A new pyridoxal-based chemosensor (<bold>PydDmen</bold>) was reported for selective detection of Zn<sup>2+</sup> in solution. The experimental and theoretical supports are provided to establish Zn<sup>2+</sup> induced transformation of <bold>PydDmen</bold> to 3-pyridone tautomeric form.
