Splat and other rapid quenching techniques were applied to a systematic study of simple oxides, and four new pure oxide glasses were obtained (V 2 O 5 , TeO 2 , MoO 3 , and WO 2 ). The high‐temperature tetragonal form of WO 3 coexists with a metastable short‐range‐order‐only phase. The structure of a new metastable high‐temperature phase, δ‐Ta 2 O 6 , resembles δ‐Nb 2 O 6 . Predominant phases found in quenched Al 2 O 3 belong to the γ‐(spinel type) series.
