Application of gibberellic acid to the floral stigma of a sterile somatic hybrid between birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus L.) and L. conimbricensis Wild. induced development of seedless pods. Pods formed from gibberellic acid-treated flowers of birdsfoot trefoil, somatic hybrid, and L. conimbricensis exhibited 93%, 3%, and no dehiscence, respectively, after incubation at 15.5% relative humidity for 72 h. Indehiscence of the somatic hybrid was associated with reduced lignification of the seed pod mesocarp compared with birdsfoot trefoil as determined by phloroglucinol-HCL staining. Indehiscence was apparently transferred from L. conimbricensis, which also exhibited a low level of mesocarp lignification.Key words: Lotus corniculatus L., protoplast fusion, pod dehiscence
