The Monte Carlo method is rapidly becoming the model of choice for simulating light transport in tissue. This paper provides all the details necessary for implementing a Monte Carlo program. The paper supplies implementation details for a Monte Carlo program and analytic expressions for convolution calculations with flat and Gaussian beams. It discusses variance‑reduction schemes that improve Monte Carlo efficiency and presents useful validation benchmarks.
