Concrete incorporates chemical and mineral admixtures. These interact with cement constituents to influence cement hydration. This article focuses on admixture-cement compatibility and provides examples of the results of incompatible admixtures. These include abnormal setting and loss of workability due to the type of gypsum in the cement, the influence of soluble alkalis on the stability of the air void structure of concrete, suppressed strength development in sulfate-resistant concrete, and cement-superplasticizer incompatibility in high-performance concrete.
