For molecular-scale electronic devicesnon-conjugated materials whose π-orbitals are close enough to allow energy transfer by the so-called Dexter mechanism are of interest. In this paper the synthesis of a soluble polymer (see Figure) is described in which aromatic conjugation and through-space π-orbital overlap (homoconjugation) alternate and which is capable of intramolecular energy transfer by spatial π-orbital overlap.
