Synkinesia alone cannot explain the extent of ipsilateral activation in primary sensorimotor cortex. The explanation offered for our findings is that preexisting uncrossed motor neural pathways may be accessed or recruited to compensate for damage to the crossed motor pathways after ischemic stroke.
