Cynodonts are very advanced mammal-like reptiles of the Permian-Triassic which are of special interest to evolutionists because they gave rise to \nthe Class Mammalia during Middle or Late Triassic \ntime. Cynodonts have been known from strata of \nEarly Triassic age in South Africa for over one \nhundred years, and numerous specimens have been \ncollected and described. In recent years the record \nof cynodonts has been extended into earlier and \nlater time zones, not only in southern Africa but \nin East Africa, South America, Russia , China, and, \nmost recently, in North America. Much of the \nmaterial from outside of Africa has not yet been \nfully described.
