This paper examines the usefulness and specifics of the Hopfield neural network as applied to optimal economic/environmental dispatching of thermal generating units in an electric power system. A simulator is developed and criteria for selecting its parameters are discussed to obtain an optimal dispatch in the minimum amount of iterations. Particular emphasis is placed on the effects of variations in the selection of Hopfield parameters both with respect to the final result and the number of iterations required to reach a final solution.< <ETX xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">></ETX>
