Abstract

It is now well established that the parotid gland concentrates plasmaiodide to an extent comparable with that of the thyroid gland (1–3). The hypothesis of the identity of the trapping mechanisms in the parotidand in the thyroid is supported by the observations that the iodide concentration gradients between the glands and the plasma are about thesame (2–4) and that both gradients can be reduced to almost zero by the administration of thiocyanate, perchlorate, or nitrate (4–8).
