The ore deposits of the Herberton Tinfield occur in four mappable zones of district zoning type. These are related to the Elizabeth Creek Granite, one of several Upper Paleozoic granites in the area, and its metamorphic aureole, which affects Paleozoic sedimentary and volcanic rocks. An inner tungsten zone, mainly confined to the Elizabeth Creek Granite, passes progressively outwards into tin, copper and lead zones. The mineralization is considered to have been introduced during the intrusion and solidification of the Elizabeth Creek Granite.
