Dielectric, piezoelectric and optical properties were investigated at room temperature for hot-pressed and ordinarily fired ceramics in a ternary system of Ba(Ca 1/3 Nb 2/3 )O 3 -PbZrO 3 -PbTiO 3 . A phase diagram, dielectric constants and electromechanical coupling factors are shown. Optical transmittances higher than 65% at 600 nm were observed for polished thin plates (0.25 mm thick). Also, large electrooptic coefficients (linear ( r c ) and quadratic ( R )) were measured for specimens with compositions near the morphotropic boundary between tetragonal and rhombohedral phases. The overall characteristics of the present material were found to resemble those of PLZT.
