The Hashemite kingdom of Jordan is a small Arab country in the Middle East in the northeast of Saudi Arabia. In comparative terms, Jordan is slightly smaller than the state of Indiana. It is considered a developing country, with inadequate supplies of water and other natural resources, such as oil, which contributes to the main economic problems of debt, poverty, and unemployment. The main export commodities of Jordan are clothing, phosphates, fertilizers, potash, vegetables, manufactured goods, and pharmaceuticals.1 Pharmaceutical products are the third-largest foreign currency earner for Jordan after clothing and potash exports, with an export volume rising close to $181 million in 2001 from $154 million in the previous year, many of which had a Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) compliance certificate from the European Union. Jordan is a well-educated nation, with a literacy level of 91.3%.1 While Arabic is Jordan’s official language, English is widely understood among the middle and upper classes.
