Abstract Dynamic stress–strain diagrams of polyurethane packaging foams have been obtained from free fall drop tests. The dynamic curves become higher as the deformation rates increase. An equation is proposed to describe the stress–strain dependence for different deformation rates. The model of filament buckling explains the form of the observed stress–strain dependence and phenomena related to repeated loading of the foam.
