Abstract Pot experiments were carried out under greenhouse conditions to study the effects of liming on Cd uptake by lettuce grown in two different soil types. The effect of single lime applications a year, was followed in two consecutive years. Soil pH increased in both soils types in response to liming. There was no significant difference between the two doses of lime. On the Mollic Fluvisol soil (S2), increased plant biomass production was observed in the year of liming while growth reductions were found in the next year. On the Eutric Fluvisol soil (S1), no difference was found in plant weight in the first year. In the second year, significant decreases in fresh and dry weight were also found in limed treatments compared to control. Cd uptake by lettuce was reduced by liming in both years on the Eutric Fluvisol soil, but only in the second year on the Mollic Fluvisol soil.
