Abstract

IEEE 802.16e is an emerging standard for mobile wireless broadband access systems. In any mobile networks, power saving is one of the most important features for the extension of devices' lifetime. In this paper, we introduce the sleep-mode operation of IEEE 802.16e and parameters related to this operation. Then, we adapt these parameters according to different traffic types for efficient power saving. For CBR traffic, by setting a proper initial-sleep window size, the maximum delay can be guaranteed while saving the average power consumption. For FTP traffic, by sleeping during queue-empty periods, the throughput performance is barely sacrificed while efficient power saving is accomplished.
