With pyridine as a neutral electron-donor ligand, the [S P S]+ ion can be isolated as a salt [(C5H5N)2PS2]+X− (X Br, I) that is stabilized both in the solid state and in solution. The structures of these salts were characterized by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystal structure analysis (structure depicted on the right). The position of the equilibrium that exist between [(C5H5N)2 PS2]X and (C5H5N)PS2X in acetonitrile is dependent on the basicity of the halogen.
