Abstract Hammett's substitution constant σ for the methylsulphonyl group has been determined, giving σ‐meta‐CH 3 SO 2 = 0.61 5 (0.65 22 ) and two values for σ‐para‐CH 3 SO 2 viz. + 1.15 for the substituted phenol and aniline and + 0.73 for the benzoic acid. This indicates that the methylsulphonyl group has a negative mesomeric effect and that its sulphur atom can extend the octet of electrons to a decet structure.
