Keeping sulfate: The extracellular endosulfatases, which modulate signaling pathways by removing sulfate groups from heparan sulfate can be inhibited by replacing the 6-sulfate destined for cleavage with an inhibitory sulfamate motif. Glucosamine-6-sulfamate analogues demonstrate biochemical inhibition and utility as tools to understand the biological and therapeutic relevance of the endosulfatases.
