Oral Glucose Tolerance Test in Normal Children

Abstract

Glucose tolerance tests were performed on 200 healthy children, ranging in age from one to thirteen years, without a family history of diabetes. Those children past the age of six had higher blood sugar values at all points in the test, but significant differences were found only at fasting and at one-half hour. Sex and body build did not seem to influence the results. Fifteen per cent of the tests were “flat” with all values below 110 mg. per 100 ml. The use of these norms to interpret oral glucose tolerance tests in higher risk groups for diabetes mellitus is described.
